5 KEY STEPS
to teaching reading
comprehension strategies:
1. Introduction: Explain the what, why, and how of a particular strategy
2. Modeling: Demonstrate the process for the students; talk your way through it
so they can see and hear your specific steps.
3. Guided Practice: Have the students help you complete the process, and
transition into you helping them complete the process on their
own.
4. Independent Practice: Have the students use the strategy alone, in pairs, or in
small groups. Have them transfer the strategy to other
materials or content areas. Offer assistance only when
necessary.
5. Re-teach: If you notice students struggling during their independent practice,
you may need to pull aside an individual or a small group of students
and review all or part of the reading comprehension strategy again.
